The official Comic-Con website may not have rolled out its programming schedule yet or very many details at all about what to expect from this year’s Con, but that’s not going to stop us. After extensive hours of research (i.e., Google trolling), here’s what we can tell you about this year’s Geekapalooza.
FILM PANELS
IESB.net brings the goods on what films to expect promotional hype from early looks at in the legendary Hall H. Exact scheduling and guests participating have not yet been determined, though each big company tends to block out huge chunks of time to talk about all of their titles in a single setting, so be aware. Here’s what each big film company is expected to pitch our way:
- Warner Bros.: RocknRolla, Ninja Assassin, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Terminator: Salvation, Watchmen, Friday the 13th. Oh, and there’s this little arthouse pic you might have heard of called Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince… Don’t be surprised if WB brings a first trailer to CCI.
- Paramount: Tropic Thunder, G.I. Joe, and Star Trek. A full Tropic Thunder screening is expected. Wouldn’t be surprised to see a good sneak peek at the animated Monsters and Aliens. PCG also hopes to see or hear a little something about Transformers 2.
- Weinstein Company: Zack and Miri Make a Porno, Fanboys. A full Fanboys premiere is rumored.
- Lionsgate: The Spirit, Punisher: War Zone.
- Fox: City of Ember, Mirrors, The Day the Earth Stood Still, and just maybe X-Men Origins: Wolverine (c’mon, they’d be crazy not to). But what about Dragonball andNight at the Museum II? Or could Fox pull a major coup and show off a little bit of… Avatar?
- Sony: Quarantine, Underworld 3: Rise of the Lycans, Quantum of Solace. What about Angels and Demons, 2012, or Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs? No word yet.
- Universal: Death Race, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, and possibly Land of the Lost.
- Summit: Twilight.
Conspicuously absent from this list? Disney, which has Prince of Persia and a wide assortment of Pixar and traditionally animated films in the cooker; and DreamWorks, which has Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones. Hopefully they just haven’t announced their participation yet; Disney in particular usually has a memorable showing each year.
Fox/Walden has a unique marketing stunt planned to promote City of Ember: Walden Media is recreating the film’s titular city on a private two-car train that will transport 25 members of the media on a 2.5 hour journey to the San Diego Convention Center (presumably from L.A.). Walden’s hired professional set decorators to style the 1949 Pullman Rail Car and fill it with props and costumes from the movie. An additional rail car will be equipped to screen 15 minutes of exclusive footage from the film. Sadly, this unique experience will not be available to the public, but only to a select few members of the “most influential” members of the press. Strangely, PCG’s invitation seems to have been lost in the mail.
Author Kirstin Thompson reveals that TheOneRing.net is hosting a panel about The Hobbit films sometime during the Con. Illustrator John Howe is expected to be among the panel’s special guests.
TV PANELS
A tentative list of panels related to hot TV shows has leaked online, and been posted in various places. Here’s a compilation of the various listings we’ve seen, and remember all of this is highly unconfirmed:
Thursday, July 24th
10:00-11:00: Kings
11:45-12:45: Knight Rider
5:45-6:45: Dexter
Friday, July 25th
10:15-11:15: Big Bang Theory
12:15-1:15: Stargate Atlantis
3:00-4:00: Ghost Hunters
Saturday, July 26th
10:45-11:45: Heroes
11:30-12:30: Terminator - The Sarah Connor Chronicles
12:00-1:00: Lost
12:45-1:45: The Office writers (hosted by Rainn Wilson)
2:15-3:15: Battlestar Galactica
3:15-4:15: Pushing Daisies
3:30-4:30: Chuck
4:45-5:45: Fringe
4:45-5:45: Eureka
6:00-7:PM: TV Guide panel (featuring Ronald D. Moore and Jason Smilovic)
Sunday, July 27th
10:00-11:00: Smallville
10:30-11:30: It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
11:15-12:15: Supernatural
Other shows scheduled for panel-ization: 24, American Dad, Bones, Dollhouse, Family Guy, Futurama, Gorgeous Tiny Chicken Machine Show, Kyle XY, The Middleman, Prison Break, Samurai Girls, The Simpsons, Spectacular Spider-Man, and Wizard’s First Rule.
PCG noted rumors repeated around the Net that Heroes mastermind Tim Kring hopes to screen the entire season premier of Heroes at CCI, but this has yet to be finalized (or officially confirmed, for that matter). The premier is scheduled to be a 2-hour affair, and there’s obviously not enough time for that on the Saturday hour-long panel at 10:45, so some adjustments or additions would be necessary to make this work.
Friday night, the entire cast of Mystery Science Theater 3000 — that’s Joel Hodgson, Mike Nelson, Trace Beaulieu, Paul Chaplin, Frank Conniff, Bill Corbett, Jim Mallon, Kevin Murphy, Bridget Nelson, Mary Jo Pehl, and J. Elvis Weinstein — is reuniting for a special panel moderated by Patton Oswalt.
Stay tuned for more Comic-Con updates as news is released/leaked/found.
