Flick Face-Off: The Dark Knight vs Mama Mia

C’mon. Seriously…

There is absolutely no competition here. Sure, releasing Mama Mia on the same week as the Dark Knight is a savvy bit of counter-marketing to reach the people (women) who have no interest in seeing a movie starring Christian Bale and Heath Ledger (do such women exist?).

I’ll keep this short. One of these movies (do I need to tell you?) will be breaking records this weekend. The Dark Knight will rake in at least $140 million dollars this weekend while Mama Mia could grab about $10 million if the guy bringing his girlfriend to see Batman doesn’t buy their tickets in advance and is forced to let her choose the movie instead.

Oh, and Space Chimps will be completely overlooked, but it could possibly make more than last week’s dismal $5 million pull for Meet Dave. Stop it, Eddie. Just stop.

As for last week, I was close, but over-estimated. Hellboy 2 brought in $34 million at #1 and I guessed $40. Journey to the Center of the Earth pulled in $21 (placing 3rd) while I guessed $35. Still a good weekend for Hellboy 2, but not as good as I hoped. Regardless, it was a great movie.

    My guess is:
    $130 million for Dark Knight
    $20 million for Mama Mia - I think the fan base there is bigger than you think.

    By the way, Christian Bale has been my favorite actor since I was a kid (Empire of the Sun, Treasure Island cable tv movie and Newsies! etc etc) and I LOVED Batman Begins. I will probably see Dark Knight more than once in the theatre.

    Space Chimps looks so unbelieveably bad.. at the theatre for Wall-E I first thought the Space Chimp preview was one of those movie theatre ads about not talking loud in the theatre. Oh man, that’s a real movie? Yikes…

    i heard the dark knight made 18 mil off midnight shows alone. yowza.
