This is a weird week. I’m torn.
This is a great example of summer movie counter-marketing. Big sci-fi adventure versus a big bawdy comedy. I’m rooting for both. But I’m way too distracted by Comic-Con madness to probably see either this weekend. Maybe on Monday… my sleep in and recover day. Anyway, as anticipated as the X-Files: I Want to Believe movie is by geeks, it’s Will Ferrell and John C Reilly’s big dumb Step Brothers movie that’s going to take the cake this week. It’s entirely possible that neither will overcome the Dark Knight juggernaut (it’s almost guaranteed), but it’s Step Brothers that will probably out-sell the X-Files due to its broader appeal. That said, Step Brothers will probably bring in $30 million while the X-Files will sell about $20 million. But Batman will still reign as #1 at the box office.
As for last week, well, I obviously underestimated the power of the record-breaking caped crusader. I guessed about $18 million less than the official $158 million take and underestimated Mama Mia as well, which made almost 3 times what I guessed by hauling in $27 million. Go mama!

I’m guessing Step Brothers & X Files will be pretty close, around $24-$25 million each. I’m a HUGE X-Files fan, we’re talking episode guides, fan boards and erm, possibly a Mulder action figure in there, and I’m barely excited about this. Batman will clobber them both for sure.
Having said I wasn’t excited about X-Files should have clued me in… and I also said not to underestimate Mama Mia fans. X Files wasn’t bad by any means but it felt like watching an episode from the last season or so, the one I abadoned because I lost interest.
