This is an odd one. Stoner action flick versus a rare chick flick sequel. And neither of them were released on Friday. Both opted for the Wednesday release, hoping for a little more time in the theaters before the new Star Wars movie hits screens. It used to be that August was sci-fi blockbuster free, but not so this year. Even Tropic Thunder, which locked down its release date months before Clone Wars was announced as a film, bumped up its release date by 2 days (August 13th), just to give it a chance at the box office. But more on that next week…
I see this is as an easy win for current comedy golden child Seth Rogen and company, despite its R rating. It actually has a shot at knocking big bad Batman from his perch at the top of the box office charts for the first time since the Dark Knight was released. But I don’t think we should discount the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 (thank god they didn’t sub-title it… you’d need two marquees to hold it all). The original film and the book its based on as a strong following among women and will likely draw it’s own substantial crowd… just not one as big as those who want to see stoners on the run from corrupt cops. If we’re counting the 5 day haul from Wednesday, we’re looking at a good $60 first weekend for Pineapple and a good $30 for Sisterhood.
As for last week, Swing Vote couldn’t swing even the low amount I predicted (it got $6 million to my guess of $8 million). And even the Mummy 3 couldn’t beat the Dark Knight on its 3rd straight week at the top. The Mummy 3 did better than I thought, though… grabbing $40 million (just behind the Dark Knight’s $42 million take). Seriously? What movie makes $42 million in it’s 3rd week anymore? Most movies don’t make that during their entire run!
And, yes, in case you’re wondering, the placement of the pictures is intentional… going for maximum creep factor.
By the way, the pictures of those 4 girls had to be taken separately. There is no way Alexis Bledel’s head is anywhere near as big as the other girls’ heads. She’s, like, really tiny and stuff.
