Flick Face-Off: Tropic Thunder vs the Clone Wars

This is another one of those odd weeks. Normally, you’d think that this would be an easy win for a new Star Wars movie (okay, it will be), but this isn’t a regular Star Wars movie. And animation (unless it’s Pixar) always seems to make some people wary. Plus, I’ve heard that some people just don’t like the look of the animation style. Meh. It’s Star Wars, so I’m seeing it no matter what. However, this is the first time I’ve ever NOT gone to a midnight premiere screening of a Star Wars movie in over 10 years. Weird, I know. And even though Tropic Thunder has a hilarious cast in a hilarious movie, and it opened 2 days earlier than the Clone Wars, it isn’t going to beat them at the box office. I expect a solid $60 million for the Clone Wars (relatively low for anything Star Wars-y) and possibly $25 million for Tropic Thunder. Tropic deserves more (I’ve seen it), but I’m not sure if the controversy around it will help it or hurt it. Of course, this means that the Dark Knight will likely be knocked from its 4 week perch at number one. If Yoda and company can’t do it, nobody can.

As I just said, the Dark Knight has stayed at number one for 4 straight weeks. This hasn’t happened in a long time. Summertime has so much turnover in the theaters, it’s usually impossible for anything to have staying power. It just beat out newcomer stoner action comedy Pineapple Express by only $3 million (Knight got $26 and Express got $23). Traveling Pants 2 came in 4th with only $10 million. Was I drunk last week? I totally over-estimated what they’d bring in by insane amounts. I’m not even going to repeat it here, because it’s just too embarrassing. If you want to know, you go find it yourself. I’m not here to hold your hand and do everything for you. It’s about time you started doing things for yourself. That’s right… man up, bucko.
