It’s that time of year again! The final dump of “summer blockbusters” or those with the potential to be called as such are filling the multiplexes. This weekend we have 3 contenders going for the top spot. Now that the Dark Knight has been kicked from the #1 spot, two comedies and an action movie are intent on beating the much more vulnerable Tropic Thunder. Office fans could help the Rainn Wilson movie, the Rocker, win the weekend while fans of the irresistibly cute and funny Anna Faris could help the House Bunny hop to the top spot. But it’s the sole big action film premiering this weekend, starring the latest dependable action star staple Jason Statham in Death Race, a remake of the cult classic B movie thriller.
Are any worth seeing? I have no idea. I’m interested in each, but I doubt I’ll see all of them this weekend. I completely suck at guessing the box office winners these days (more on that later), but I’ll guess that Death Race will do the best of the 3, followed by the Rocker, and then the House Bunny. I’m not convinced that any of them will outdo Tropic Thunder or the Dark Knight, but Death Race could be the one. The problem lies in so many movies and a drop in theater attendance, which is common this time of the year. Three new movies will spread the ticket sales pretty thin, even if you don’t count the Dark Knight juggernaut. Here are my guesses:
Death Race - $18 million
The Rocker - $12 million
House Bunny - $10 million
Okay, I really screwed up last week. How was I to know that a Star Wars movie, even an animated one, could possibly not take the top spot on its release weekend? And make less than $20 million? It’s unheard of. Again, I’m too embarrassed by my poor guesses that I’m not even going to bother listing them here. I’m very glad that Tropic Thunder did great, knocking the Dark Knight from its perch, so even though I was wrong, I can’t complain. If you haven’t seen Tropic Thunder yet, do so before the onslaught of the late-summer movies push it out of the way.
