There are legends and then there are LEGENDS. When you think of universally recognized fictional characters, who do you think of? Mickey Mouse? Darth Vader? How about Superman? There is probably not an image, an icon more recognizable than that S shield and the man who wears it, regardless of what language you speak or what part of the world you live in. Even if you’ve never held a comic book in your hand before, you KNOW who Superman is, what he’s about, and where he’s from.
Of course, if you asked most people where Superman came from, you’d pretty much get one answer: Krypton. Unfortunately, in a more real sense, Superman is from Cleveland. Back in the 1930s, two teenage boys named Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster met in the former’s home and created a bulletproof man that has gone on to inspire millions.
Unfortunately, unlike other homes that have become historic landmarks, the former home of Jerry Siegel is on its last legs. It’s been neglected for decades and is on the verge of being destroyed. Writer Brad Meltzer has gathered friends from the comic book world and elsewhere to raise funds to save that home. I could prattle on forever about this but the people over at ordinarypeoplechangetheworld.com can say it much better. To get an idea about what they’re trying to do, check out this video:
People like artist Jim Lee and writer Brian Michael Bendis, along with people like Stephen Colbert and the producers of Heroes are all offering up one of a kind items on eBay to help raise money for this worthy cause. Take some time to check it out and do what you can to help.
