First Peek at the New Judd Apatow Comedy Funny People

funnypeople1 Judd Apatow, the director who has made a name for himself as a modern comedy god with films like 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up, returns with his 3rd film, Funny People. Some of the usual Apatow suspects are involved in this movie, including Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, and Leslie Mann, but it’s the addition of Adam Sandler in the lead role along with Jason Schwartzman and Eric Bana in supporting roles that might surprise some. People will want to think of this as a goofy Adam Sandler movie with the usual goober-makes-good plotline, but one look at this trailer tells me it’s not. Just as Apatow bluntly faced off against sex and procreation in his first two films, using a volatile mixture of scatalogical humor and all-too-human tenderness, he now takes a shot at death, when the film’s lead character, a stand up comedian, discovers he’s dying. Here’s a first peek at what will likely be one of the biggest comedies of the summer. Funny People hits theaters July 31, 2009.
