In a summer packed with super sci-fi extravaganzas and sequels to sequels to sequels, the handful of comedies that sneak into the mix are a welcome change. Let me correct that: the handful of GOOD comedies that sneak into the mix are a welcome change. So far the Hangover Part 2 was okay, but was mostly a lucrative rehash of the much funnier original. Surprisingly, Adam Sandler isn’t squirting out yet another man-child coming-of-age flick this year, unless you count Zookeeper (he produced it and provides the voice of a monkey). So what’s left? Apparently Jason Bateman is the comedy go-to guy this summer. Other than appearing in Paul and the Change-Up (not to be confused with the Switch, which he headlined last year), he’s one of the three employees (along with Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day) plotting his taskmaster’s death in Horrible Bosses. When I first saw the trailer, I was surprised at how funny it actually was. I almost didn’t want to admit it. Most trailers try so hard that you can tell that they’re putting all of the funny parts into those two minutes because they know that the rest is crap. I didn’t get that impression with this trailer. And it didn’t hurt that every one of these actors is genuinely FUNNY! And it doesn’t hurt that more than a few are playing against type, including Jennifer Aniston and Colin Farrell, one oversexed and one with a comb-over, respectively.
I haven’t seen it yet, but you can probably tell what I’m expecting from Horrible Bosses from that last paragraph. But what did Luis Calderon, our Living After Midnight wee-hours reviewer have to say? Well, all it takes is a click on the play button to find out…
