Do you think you know what the worst movie ever made is? If you haven’t seen Manos the Hands of Fate, then I want to challenge your concept of WORST MOVIE EVER. Normally, watching such a film today would require the introduction of a number of illicit substances into your system just to make it through a single viewing. Thankfully, Shout! Factory and Mystery Science Theater 3000 have provided a much more palatable (and legal) option available to you.
I’m not sure how I can review this film in any fair manner due to its already notorious reputation. It was made on a shoestring budget and starring what I can only imagine were people who were completely unfamiliar with the craft known as “acting”. But that’s where the film gets its charm. That and in its horrible editing… or lack thereof. There are moments where the actors stand staring at each other long after the scene has actually ceased. If it’s any consolation, they look more confused than you will ever be by watching this “film”. Of course, Joel and the robots pick up on this and a number of other glaring gaffes throughout this classic episode of their movie mocking series. I personally don’t think that this is the best MST3K episode I’ve seen, despite how much they had to work with, but it’s got more than its share of funny. It’s worth getting just to be able to torture your friends with it. And any Halloween party that I go to this year that has this on in the background is a grade A party in my book.
So when Shout! Factory releases the Mystery Science Theater 3000 Manos the Hands of Fate Special Edition DVD to the masses on September 13th, be sure you get yours! Not only does this 2 disc set feature Joel, Tom Servo, and Crow T Robot making their trademark silhouetted smart ass remarks over this hysterically dreadful film, it also comes with the original untouched version of the film, sans wisecracks (mind altering substances not included – so watch at your own risk!).
Other bonus features include Hotel Torgo, a documentary on the making of Manos the Hands of Fate, and a series of shorts on the early days of MST3K and the secrets behind all of those educational films that used to appear on Comedy Central back in the day. The package also includes a mini poster of the all new cover by artist Steve Vance.
