The Darkest Hour Arrives On Christmas Day

This could be really fun or this could be really bad. I’m hoping for the former, but bracing for the latter. The Darkest Hour is releasing on Christmas day (apparently sneaking it in for some last minute Oscar eligibility, of course), because who doesn’t like a little alien invasion apocalypse with their egg nogg and candy canes? Sure, it takes place in Moscow, which is an interesting setting (or at least a less expensive option than shooting in LA or New York or… Vancouver) and it’s got Emile Hirsch. I count both of those as good things. But the effects in the tv spot below from cheesy to really cool to ohboy many times in those brief moments. Is there supposed to be a funny element to the film? Is it all alien attack horror with attractive teens running for their lives in a strange city? It’s hard to tell.

Is this something you’ll choose to see on Christmas day just to get away from the family for awhile?
