Will Smith has been consistently the most bankable movie star in the past 2 decades (well, mostly the 90s), but did he need to do another Men in Black movie? Did WE need another Men in Black movie? We’ve seen a number of sci-fi throwbacks in the past few years that failed to measure up to the quality of their early predecessors (Indiana Jones, Terminator, Alien, ummm, Star Wars… I’m sure you can think of more). Why do they go back? Name recognition, for one. And a paycheck. It’s rarely because there’s an amazing, THIS HAS TO BE MADE script out there. Prove me wrong, Sony.
But after seeing this trailer, I’m going to give this sequel a chance. Y’see, I like time travel stories. A lot. And if it means Will goes back to 1969 to meet… well, I won’t ruin it. It was a fun surprise.
But if the rest of the film is just a lazy rehash of the same jokes and scenes from the last two films, I’m going to beg Sony to just not waste our time by bothering to promote this any further (not likely, but I asked nicely). Those who remember might be amused, but will feel cheated. Those who don’t remember probably won’t care or they’d check out the originals.
Either way, the trailer is worth watching for that trippy last shot alone.
And, of course, it’s in 3D.
